What does this mean exactly I hear you say, well it is 'is a public education, information, and awareness campaign' organized by the good folks at sleepfoundation.org

The abrupt beeping of my old alarm made me want to shoot it in the morning and so it was with much joy that I discovered the sweeter alarm clock sound of my iPhone. Well today I discovered that just when you think life doesn't get any better, along comes two students and a silent way to wake up. Two University of Wisconsin-Madison students have designed an iPhone application that will be rolled out by Apple into it's stores in the next couple of months. Not only have they scooped $10,000 in top prize money but also bragging rights to potentialy waking up all iPhone and iTouch users. The software, called Proactive Sleep wakes you up by using light, configuring to your unique sleep cycle, the technology emits light during at the end of your ideal sleep cycle. This noninvasive technology tracks your sleep and will potentially improve your slumber, which as we know impacts all aspects of our lives.

It’s a medical fact, snorers are burning around 373 calories compared to non-snorers. The study lead by Dr. Eric Kezirian, director of the division of sleep surgery at the University of California, San Francisco, noted, “It’s something of a silver lining.”
However, don’t rely on snoring to keep you trim. Snoring can be a sign of sleep Apnea, which left untreated can be a serious health problem.

Starting the new year with a cold is a reality that many people face. Interestingly today, a new study by Carnegie Mellon University has linked sleeping patterns to our ability to fight colds:
"The immune system may control the sleep-wake pattern and lack of sleep or sleep disturbance may depress the immune response to infection"
After following a group of volunteers for 4 years, the researchers discovered that the volunteers who slept the least were five and a half times more likely to get sick. Where as those who had a greater quality of sleep were healthier and able to fight viruses much more effectively.
