Silk and Silk Concept
What is Silk?
Silk is the second strongest
natural material, the strongest being the spider’s web. Produced by the
silkworm to form cocoons, this fine but enduring thread is rightfully
deemed luxurious, and is well respected for it’s non-allergenic and
thermo regulating properties.
The accidental discovery of raw
silk is believed to have been around 2700 BC by Si Ling-Chi who went on
to weave a luminous gown for her husband, Hoang-ti the “Yellow
Emperor”. Silk usage remained almost exclusive to China for close to 3
thousand years.
Which silk does Silk Concept use?
There are a
few types of silk, which are all graded accordingly to their in
properties and performance. Here at Silk Concept we only use Mulberry
Silk. This was an easy choice due to the fact that it is the premium
silk. The mulberry worms which create this grade A silk are fed
exclusively on Mulberry tree leaves, in fact it’s the only leaves they
will eat! This diet ensures the silk is bright white, and performs
better than alternative silks in heat regulation and strength tests.
What other silks are there?
What sets Mulberry
silk apart from wild silk is the length of the single thread which
unravels from the cocoon. Habotai silk and Dupioni silk are both types
of silk which weave together shorter threads of silk, taken from
cocoons which have been damaged.
Where are your duvet’s made?
As expected the
founders of silk and seri-culture (the production of silk) are the the
finest manufacturers of silk. We are proud to work with our Chinese
manufacturers, whose production practises and achievements are well
respected and meet our social responsibility needs. We can assure you
through personal experience that our manufacturers provide a safe and
fair working environment and that human rights are upheld.
How is a Silk Concept duvet made?
There
are two parts to a Silk Concept duvet, the fill and the shell. Our
duvets are exclusively filled with 100% Mulberry raw silk. Inside your
duvet you will see thousands and thousands of strands, these were
originally cocoons, which have been stretched out to form layer upon
layer of luxurious fill! Once there are enough layers a shell made from
cotton or mulberry silk is wrapped around the fill. To complete the
duvet we loosely stitch the shell together periodically to keep the
shell flat. Some manufacturers will box stitch the duvet. Box stitching
is necessary to hold low quality silk in place, stitching directly
through the silk fill will damage its performance. In particular the
duvets ability to keep you cozy will be hampered because the stitching
stops the heat from traveling up and down the silk strands. Avoid box
stitched duvets.
Choosing the right duvet
It’s
a difficult decision to make, your bed is quite rightly your haven. You
should dress your bed accordingly. Choosing a mulberry silk filled
duvet is a step in the right direction. The health benefits and value
points are difficult to compared to down, feather, synthetic filled
duvets. There are many places to purchase a Mulberry silk filled duvet,
please remember this checklist when you are making your decision:
1. Look for a side opening.
If
the duvet doesn’t have a side opening, the seller doesn’t want you to
see the usually low grade silk inside it. Our side openings (located
next to the label) proudly enable you to see and touch smooth 100% snow
white Mulberry silk threads/strands.
2. Avoid a box stitch duvet.
Box
stitching holds inferior silk in place, Mulberry silk does not need to
be box stitched. It’s natural strength and length allows for the duvet
to hold its shape without the need for box stitching.
3. Read testimonials!

Which Silk Concept duvet is right for me?
Deluxe
or Superior? We love both duvets equally… well kind of. Really the most
important part of your duvet is the fill, so the Deluxe and Superior
are equal here. However the Superior’s silk shell will allow the fill
to be more breathable and feel’s exquisite. So whilst we love both
duvets, secretly we lust after the Superior’s !
What are the dimensions for Silk Concept duvets?
Both
our Deluxe and Superior duvets have the same dimensions and fill
depending on the size. Duvets can vary in 'standard' sizing, so it can
be worthwhile to double check your duvet will fit inside your duvet
cover.
SIZE DIMENSIONS FILL
Twin 66” x 84” 1.5kg
Double 80” x 84” 2.0kg

Caring for your new duvet is effortless. Mulberry Silk is considered
the premium silk. With its supreme strength and durability it is a
natural marvel.
No home for dust or bugs
What
makes Mulberry silk stand out from the crowd even further is the fact
that it is inhospitable to bed bugs, dust mites and immune to mold and
fungi.
A breath of fresh air!
We strongly
advise you to air your duvet twice a year (avoid direct sunlight). For
small stains please spot clean with warm soapy water. As with feather
duvets cleaning your duvet in a washing machine will seriously damage
its performance and appearance.
Love your silk duvet and wrap it in a duvet cover
To get the best out of your new duvet, place it inside a duvet cover and use a top sheet for maximum protection from spills.
Why can’t I put my duvet in the washing machine?
The
100% raw mulberry silk unique construction inside your duvet is
incredibly robust when dry however submerging it in water will
seriously damage its strength and therefore performance.
We love Eco friendly dry cleaners!
And
so do our duvets, if you do need to dry clean your duvet, please check
for an Eco friendly dry cleaner in your area. If you live in Vancouver
you should take your duvet to Shirtland at 746 Powell Street
How long will my duvet last?
If you follow the advice above we expect you to be sleeping with your duvet for over ten years.
